Tesla has finally revealed the Cybercab, a fully autonomous robotaxi that does not have a steering wheel or pedals. The company states that it will be available in 2026 with prices starting from £23,000 (US$30,000).
The long-gestating Cybercab was revealed to the public at Tesla’s ‘We, Robot’ event in California. Tesla also showcased the Robovan, an autonomous people carrier that can seat 20 people and carry cargo.
The Cybercab will be fully autonomous, with riders able to hail the vehicle through an app to drive them to their destination. The car deploys a suite of cameras and sensors to monitor its surroundings, and shares data with other Cybercabs. Tesla also said at the event in Burbank last week that owners will be able to rent out their Cybercab for an extra income flow, with the futuristic taxi available for individual purchase and not limited to fleet operations.
The Cybercab’s interior is typical of a Tesla with clean lines and a minimal design. However, contrary to current Tesla models, the robotaxi does not feature a steering wheel or pedal box. It gets a flat design for the dashboard with a massive screen in the center. In terms of exterior design, it looks like a scaled-down version of the Cybertruck, but it is more aerodynamic and features gullwing doors.
All the above-mentioned information and the estimated price are claims by Tesla and Elon Musk. Technical details on the Cybercab or specifics on its powertrain are still under wraps. It remains to be seen if the Cybercab and the Robovan make it to production within the promised timeframe.
